May 6th, 2024

Oakland, Calif. — The Texas Rangers today announced the following roster moves prior to Monday night’s series opener against the Athletics at the Oakland Coliseum:

  • Outfielder Wyatt Langford placed on 10-day Injured List, retroactive to May 5, with a right hamstring strain.
  • Infielder Jonathan Ornelas (#21) recalled from Triple-A Round Rock.

Langford exited the Rangers’ game on Saturday at Kansas City after the top of the fifth inning with right hamstring tightness. He has batted .224 with one home run and 11 RBI over 31 games for the Rangers this season in his first Major League action. He ranks among American League rookie leaders in hits (2nd, 26) and times on base (3rd, 38). Langford started 31 of the club’s first 34 games before the injury at designated hitter (team-high 19) and left field (12).

The 23-year-old Ornelas will be seeking his first Major League action in 2024. He has spent the entire campaign with Round Rock, batting .278/.320/.400/.720 (25-90) with 2 home runs and 11 RBI over 24 games/starts at shortstop (team-high 17) and second base (7). Ornelas played in 18 games for the Rangers during Spring Training, batting .240 (6-25) with 2 doubles and 2 RBI before he was optioned to Round Rock on March 10.

Ornelas saw his first big league action with the Rangers in 2023, going 1-for-7 over 8 games/2 starts spanning two stints with Texas: August 7-13 and September 9-17. He made his Major League debut on August 7, 2023 at Oakland, scoring a run as a pinch-runner in that contest. His last game with the Rangers was on September 17, 2023 at Cleveland. Ornelas has spent his entire seven-year professional career in the Texas organization since being selected in the third round of the 2018 MLB Draft out of Raymond S. Kellis High School in Glendale, Arizona.

With today’s transactions, Texas remains at the 40-man limit on the club’s Major League roster, along with six players on the 60-day Injured List: Brock Burke, Carson Coleman, Jacob deGrom, Justin Foscue, Josh Jung, and Tyler Mahle.
